Davis-based Pheronym Inc. has developed methods to brew up pheromones that can control the actions of nematodes, whose thousands of species are the most abundant critters on earth.

About 20 years ago at the University of Florida, CEO Fatma Kaplan began researching ways to affect the behavior of pest microscopic roundworms by using pheromones, which are external chemical triggers that influence mating and other behaviors. Not all nematodes are plant pests. Keep reading

Pheronym is honored to present at Seed Central’s 7th Innovators Showcase, hosted by UC Davis on January 11th, 2024.

The showcase is a valuable opportunity to connect with 40 startups from the Davis area.

Seed Central is a public-private partnership to energize the seed and ag-biotech industry cluster surrounding UC Davis. Their goals include reinforcing the collaboration between the university and local industry, attracting innovative companies to the area, and drawing attention to UC Davis as a place for advanced degrees and exciting careers.

Climate change is already affecting pest pressure in agriculture. A warming climate means pests have more reproductive cycles in a year and better survival over winter, leading to even more pest pressure in the spring. It also increases the risk of invasive and migratory pests and the diseases they carry (1). All of this adds up to more crop loss and food insecurity.  How do we deal with increased pest pressure?

Pheronym will be presenting at Entomology 2023 as part of a symposium titled “Woman in Industry: What are the challenges and how can we impact to influence”.

The event, organized by the Entomological Society of America,will take place in National Harbor, Maryland from November 5-8. The event will bring together experts from around the world to discuss the latest advances in entomology and the rapidly changing world of insects. Pheronym is honored to be speaking for a symposium as part of this event.

about the companies they built and the challenges they faced. The featured speakers are from various industries and will connect with students to help inspire them on their entrepreneurial journey.

Dr. Kaplan, our CEO, will be presenting Pheronym’s technology at the 7th Biocontrol, Biostimulants and Microbiome Congress , organized by GlobalEngage in Raleigh, North Carolina from October 24-25. 

The event will explore developments in biocontrol, biostimulants and microbiome in increasing crop yield, improving soil health & nutrient uptake, and efficient water use. Experts from industry and academia will also discuss pest management strategies and provide regulatory updates in the field. Pheronym is honored to be among this year’s presenters.
